White House sees good chance of long-term budget deal

07 February 2018

Last September, President Donald Trump canceled the measure, which gave legal status to about 700,000 youthful immigrants brought illegally to the U.S.as children, including more than 8,000 in CT.

Some House members are wary of the early details of the Senate deal.

Passing 245 to 182, the House bill would fund most of the agencies until 23rd March, while it is the nonstarter of the Senate due to the Democratic opposition. The bill will next go the Senate, where Democrats are expected to oppose it because it doesn't also provide longer term money for domestic programs like opioid recovery efforts, transportation, and education.

That idea, however, is a nonstarter with Senate Democrats, who insist that increases to both the Pentagon and domestic programs advance at the same time.

"Senator Schumer and I had a good meeting this morning about a caps deal and the other issues we've been discussing for some months now". McConnell said that he believes an agreement could be made soon, but unsure if he could get the 60 votes needed for approval.

SpaceX's Falcon Heavy rocket, the world's most powerful, soars into orbit
A space-suited mannequin was strapped in the driver's seat, and the radio set to play a David Bowie soundtrack on a loop. That honor belongs to NASA's Saturn V rocket, which was used for the Apollo moon landings and was retired in the 1970s.

Prospects for dealing with immigration, however, were as fuzzy as ever.

The reason for the shutdown was due mainly to the lengthy debate over the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program formed under former President Obama that granted protection from deportation to "Dreamers", those who came to the United States illegally as minors.

House Freedom Caucus member Andy Biggs says nobody in Congress wants to relive last month's shutdown fiasco.

At a February 6 House hearing, Defense Secretary Jim Mattis complained of the process of governing by continuing resolution. The White House has its own framework, which includes $25 billion in border security and a path to citizenship for 1.8 million DACA-eligible immigrants as well as major changes to the country's legal immigration system.

Senate leaders late Tuesday neared a broader budget deal that could end Washington's cycle of short-term funding fixes, but how it would be received with both parties' hardline caucuses is unclear.

Those banks, in recent days, have announced they will ban their customers from using credit cards to purchase digital currencies. However, similarly to Lloyds , there is little detail from the provider as to how this new policy will be enacted.

GOP leaders can lose only about 20 votes from their party before they must rely on Democrats to pass legislation, giving the minority leverage to demand concessions.

"I'm sorry for that characterization. I don't think that's going to happen". But they appear willing to accept a lower level of spending as part of guarantees on the domestic side. The continuing resolution/omnibus mash-up (dubbed a "cromnibus" by denizens of Capitol Hill) would keep the government running through March 23, fund community health centers for two years, and would include the rest of the year's worth of defense funding.

In addition, Democrats won an additional $57 billion over two years in new funding for domestic programs - $26 billion for the remainder of this fiscal year, which began October 1, and $31 billion for fiscal year 2019.

Senate leaders said Tuesday that they are nearing a deal on a budget and spending plan and could release the measure in time to add it to a short-term spending bill that must be approved by the end of the day on Thursday.

Will there be a government shutdown? The bill, set for a vote on Tuesday, would increase Pentagon funding by about $30 billion, to $584 billion, breaking existing spending caps as well as making funding available through September.

But such a timeline is quickly becoming a relic of the past. "That's very hard to balance and be successful", Greenfield said. Instead, he said , Disney is dipping its toes in streaming while trying to preserve its traditional business models.

Democrats were hoping to get support from a bloc of 10 to 15 business-first Republicans led by Maine Sen.
