Oculus Rift headsets bricked as company forgets to update security certificate

09 March 2018

It's probably best to just wait for Oculus to fix it, unfortunately. We now have an Oculus software update in place that fixes the issue where Rift may fail to start up.

Reports from Oculus Rift owners worldwide have been pouring in about their headsets not working.

Oculus Rift + Touch Bundle Price Now Permanently at $399

In the time before Oculus acknowledged the problem, many Rift owners around the world took to the internet to complain about their seemingly bricked headsets. Apparently the issue relates to how the Oculus software contacts servers as the security certificate used to protect the connection expired.

The problem was later identified to be the result of an expired Oculus Runtime Service security certificate. But the folks over at Facebook-owned Oculus have to be a little red-faced today.

While the fix has been issued, PC World wrote that the incident was a reminder of how easily the "digital ecosystem" can break down. For end users this manifests as an opaque "Can't reach Oculus Runtime Service" error message.

Oculus have since released a software update which can be directly downloaded by users, which will allow the Rift to successfully boot up.

A widespread outage is certainly a priority for Oculus, so Rifts should be back up and running as soon as they possibly can. "We're working through the options now, and we expect to have more details to share later this evening".
