Trump's meeting with video game industry was not exactly productive

11 March 2018

A representative for Rep. Vickey Hartzler said this meeting is the "first of many" with industry leaders.

The big news yesterday about North Korea will no doubt be the major topic of conversation.

Jimmy Fallon has joined the rest of the late-night hosts in taking low blows at President Donald Trump. "Meeting being planned!" Huckabee Sanders will definitely be getting questions about the planning of this meeting between the President and Kim Jong-Un. This comes after the games industry previously stated that it had not been contacted by Trump, despite White House officials claiming that a meeting with game executives had been organized.

Democratic President Bill Clinton asked the federal government that June to look into whether media companies, including the video game industry, were marketing violent content to young people.

"We discussed the numerous scientific studies establishing that there is no connection between video games and violence, First Amendment protection of video games, and how our industry's rating system effectively helps parents make informed entertainment choices", ESA said in a statement.

But despite the obvious teething problems, Mourinho does not see Sanchez as a weakness in the United team. But I think at least one point would have been absolutely fair for us, but we have to take that as well".

Among the critics who will be present are Lt. Col. Dave Grossman, who through his Killology Research Group has made a career of suggesting video games and other violent media are desensitizing young people to violence. Among other actions, Obama called on Congress in 2013 to fund research at the Centers for Disease Control "into the effects that violent video games have on young minds".

PTC President Tim Winter told CBN News that violent video games "desensitizes kids to real-life violence, encourages them to resolve disputes with violence and gives them an unfair sense of fear of their environment around them-that it's more risky than it is".

Multiple studies have found no connection between the two.

The self-regulated Entertainment Software Ratings Board, created in 1994 as a response to controversies related to violent and sexual imagery used in games, developed a ratings system meant to guide parents when they buy games.

We haven't heard back yet from the game makers that attended the meeting, but here's hoping they have a better chance to have their side heard, instead of simply being dismissed because of opposite views.

In New York, the UN Security Council will again gather to discuss the failure of a ceasefire it had demanded last week. The UN says 400,000 people are trapped in the towns and villages there and are running out of food and medicine.

As the meeting ended, it remains unclear what the Trump administration will do regarding violence in video games moving forward. "And also video games".

"As a video game violence researcher and someone who has done scholarship on mass homicides, let me state very emphatically: There is no good evidence that video games or other media contributes, even in a small way, to mass homicides or any other violence among youth", wrote Chris Ferguson, professor of psychology and criminal justice at Texas A&M University, a week after the Sandy Hook shooting in 2012.

At a White House meeting last month, Trump said he was concerned about violence in video games and movies, and called for them to be subject to ratings.

Henson said there was "respectful disagreement" during the meeting, as representatives of the video game industry argued that there's no link between violence in their products and actual violence, which the PTC contests.

For decades, activists and politicians have pointed their fingers at violence depicted in video games, music and movies after tragedies, like the Parkland, Florida shooting. However, the decision was ruled as unconstitutional in 2011. "The process by which the ratings are applied is secretive, those who administer them are accountable to nobody; and parents have no real recourse when they are misapplied", Henson said.

It's not often that we see purely straightforward films that are simply about vanquishing darkness with the light from within us. DuVernay tweeted a link to Coogler's essay, writing: "When your friend makes you tear up on opening day".
