Cricket Australia (CA) said Smith and Warner had been suspended from "all worldwide and domestic cricket" while opening batsman Cameron Bancroft has been banned for nine months over the ball-tampering incident during the third Test in South Africa.

Bancroft was caught tampering with the cricket ball by TV cameras on the third day of the 3rd Test with South Africa in Cape Town.

Air New Zealand has released a social media video lampooning the Australian cricket team in the wake of the ball-tampering row. He was also subsequently banned from playing professional cricket for one year by Cricket Australia.

Both players have also been ejected from this year's Indian Premier League (IPL), losing contracts worth almost $2 million each.

The Australian cricket team lost a major sponsor and a host of large companies tore up branding deals with individual players on Thursday as the fallout of a ball-tampering scandal tore into the financial core of the country's favourite pastime. Why, even Cambridge Analytica's most insidious online mind games would not have got them to do more than to rap the Aussies on the knuckles and "tut-tut" them.

THE exact moment Steve Smith's career crumbled inside Australia's Newlands Cricket Ground dressing room has been revealed.

"They are young men and I hope people will give them a second chance. Their health and wellbeing is extremely important to us", added Lehmann.

"I worry about Steve Smith's mental state because he's been called everything under the sun as a result of what Warner has really perpetrated here and unfortunately for Steve he was stupid enough, I suppose, to fall in with what was going on without being more vigilant and stopping it before it started".

In terms of Smith's future captaincy prospects, CA said that "would be conditional on acceptance by fans and the public".

Smith has played 64 Tests, and scored 6199 runs at an average of 61.37. According to reports, Warner concocted a plan to illegally use sandpaper on cricket balls to gain an illicit advantage during matches, a scheme uncovered in a March 2018 match against South Africa. Queenslander Matthew Renshaw, dropped from the Test side on the eve of the Ashes, fellow Bull Joe Burns, another former Test opener, and Victorian dasher Glenn Maxwell have been drafted in as replacements. Smith is now the top-ranked Test batsman in the world.

Contrary to popular belief, Lehmann was found not guilty of any wrongdoing and CA chief executive James Sutherland said that he will continue in his post.

"I am satisfied that the sanctions in this case properly reflect a balance between the need to protect the integrity and reputation of the game and the need to maintain the possibility of redemption for the individuals involved, all of whom have learned hard lessons through these events", said James Sutherland, Cricket Australia CEO.

Smith has been charged on five counts, key among them being knowledge of tampering and failure to take steps as captain to prevent it.

Warner, the pugnacious 31-year-old opening batsman, was expected to be banned for 12 months as well, meaning his worldwide career may be over. Sports apparel maker ASICS Corp meanwhile cancelled sponsorship deals with vice-captain Warner and Bancroft, effective immediately, because of the incident.
