Uber won't renew California license to test AVs

29 March 2018

In 2016, Uber made a decision to shift from using Ford Fusion cars to Volvo XC90s for its self-driving auto program.

According to the report, this wasn't a minor design change. But they should not panic by shutting down the potential of self-driving cars.

However, Ford Motor Co., Nissan Motor Co., General Motors, and Alphabet Inc.'s Waymo division continue to test their autonomous vehicles. Velodyne acknowledged that with the rooftop lidar there is a roughly three-meter blind spot around a vehicle, saying that more sensors are necessary. Uber immediately sent those vehicles to Arizona, where Ducey welcomed them.

Should companies be more transparent about their new technologies?

Little Rock man arrested after exposing himself to teenage girl, police say
Police said they believe the suspects were in the auto involved in the traffic stop on Battleground Avenue. After further investigation, it was determined that Romero had shot a 19-year-old woman at the home.

The Uber-controlled vehicle slammed into 49-year-old Elaine Herzberg on March 18, killing her. Ducey effectively suspended the transportation company's "ability to test and operate autonomous vehicles on Arizona's public roadways". He then pushed through a law legalizing ride-hailing services like Uber and Lyft, a move his Republican predecessor vetoed the year before. Uber's Arizona development center in Phoenix employs 400 people working with 150 cars.

Uber Freight has stopped its driverless truck program, at least for the time being.

In the earliest days of his administration, Ducey ordered a state agency to stop citing Uber drivers for violating the state's taxicab laws.

In conversations between the state agency and Uber since the crash, "Uber has indicated that it will not renew its current permit to test autonomous vehicles in California", said the letter from Brian Soublet, DMV deputy director and chief counsel, to Austin Heyworth, a public affairs manager for Uber.

Motorists warned on Easter traffic chaos with snow, rain forecast
What's more, some light rain may reach parts of Berks County, the Lehigh Valley and the Poconos sometime during the evening rush. A few more weather disturbances could slide in early next week providing at least a small chance of pockets of light snow.

This is what OVER-regulation looks like!

If and when Uber returns to California's roads in hopes of advancing its proprietary self-driving technology, it will have to apply for and receive approval for a unique permit that gives the "all clear" for using the state's public roads in the name of commerce.

The governor's self-driving oversight committee met for the first - and only - time in August 2016. Google's former self-driving vehicle project, Waymo, only required human intervention for every 5,600 miles.

Gov. Doug Ducey staged a PR spectacle to to welcome Uber to Arizona. It had hoped to prove that the program was something he should get behind; its efforts to get to that point appear to have achieved the opposite.

Easter egg hunt Friday in Frazee
The public can get a look at the sculpture at the club's annual Easter egg hunt set for Saturday, starting at 8:30 a.m. More than 700 children participated in five separate egg hunts at the Clark Recreation Center on Saturday, March 24.

Uber had installed its own technology on the vehicle instead, according to Aptiv, the company that provides the Volvo with its cameras and radar, Bloomberg reported on Monday.
