"Really put the pedal to the metal". One breath-taking sequence, set inside The Shining's Overlook Hotel, is the closest we get to the classic Spielberg slow build, but it's not long before things revert to ludicrous type.
When the entire cast, writers, and a director named Steven Spielberg strolled across the Paramount Theatre stage at SXSW, they were greeted with euphoric applause. It wants to race into it at full throttle.
In Ready Player One, we're meant to see the plucky gamer and the corporate suit as ideological enemies, one representing creative freedom and individual choice, the other soulless corporate profit motive.
"These days", Watts says by way of introduction, "reality's a bummer".
Beyonce bitten by actress at December party
Model and all-round Twitter don Chrissy Teigan has delighted in teasing her followers, claiming she knows what went down. Sanaa Lathan and Sara Foster , two actresses who were at the December party in question, have denied any wrongdoing.
With bleakness all around, seemingly everyone is addicted to strapping on a headset and entering the virtual-reality landscape of the OASIS. Your imagination is your only limit. Wade, employing the cool elfin avatar "Parzival", becomes a star in the OASIS when he is the first to make headway in an ongoing challenge to find an "Easter egg" hidden in the game, placed by deceased game designer James Halliday (Mark Rylance), who has promised the victor will inherit the trillion-dollar OASIS empire. But five years after his game began, no one has come close to completing even its first challenge: a vehicle race through the streets of NY to the finish line, with some intimidating obstacles throughout. Every film I produced or directed in the 80s had underdogs as heroes, and Wade is certainly one.
So it shouldn't come as too much of a surprise that after almost a decade away from crafting the populist entertainment that made him one of Hollywood's most beloved filmmakers, director Steven Spielberg is making his splashy return to the worlds of sci-fi and fantasy with the visually dazzling Ready Player One. The great director Steven Spielberg had a lot to do with that.
The movie, "Ready Player One", was a ideal blend of sci-fi, action, horror, comedy and romance.
Cinemablend, at a recent press day, asked Ready Player One script writer Zak Penn about the arduous task of sifting through all of the pop-culture references that he could, and couldn't use for the adaptation, as well as how to get the rights to various pieces of intellectual property.
Sun to start Wednesday, isolated showers by afternoon
All in all, Easter weekend won't be a total loss because of the weather, it just won't be sunny, warm and definitely not 100% dry. Low temperatures will stay in the low to mid 40s with winds from the north increasing to 10 miles per hour by morning.
Ready Player One takes us to a world set in 2045, where Virtual Reality is very much alive. Good guy Parzival (Tye Sheridan) gets the first key by figuring out how to prevail in a auto race in which, to quote him, "no one ever makes it past Kong". Wow, wouldn't that be something, Wade and many others think.
Parzival is joined in his quest by Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), whose sylphlike avatar has him smitten, even as his best friend Aech (best not to spoil who plays this character) reminds him that people in the Oasis may not look anything like their offline selves. There are many like him, including a newfound ally in Art3mis (Olivia Cooke), and the corporation IOI, led by Nolan Sorrento (Ben Mendelsohn), whose aim is to monetize everything in the Oasis.
Ready Player One gets a 78% certified fresh from Rotten Tomatoes. There's mention of prior "bandwidth riots" ahead of this battle over keeping OASIS an open playground to all.
Ultimately, your enjoyment of Ready Player One will be determined on whether you want the film to follow the book. And Ready Player One, though based on the best-selling Ernest Cline YA novel, isn't franchise property like we've seen in Easters past like Batman V. Superman or Fast and Furious. The book had seven movies in it, maybe twelve. There's a clear message about our technology-obsessed culture. The film loves the 1980s as much as you do.
