Prosecutors also say that the president's own statement that he did not know Cohen paid Clifford may negate any claim of attorney-client privilege on that matter.

Trump and Cohen are not co-defendants are not represented by the same attorneys.

Broidy was a vice-chairman for the Trump campaign's joint fund with the Republican Party during the 2016 presidential campaign, as well as the vice-chairman of the Trump Victory Fund.

But Trump was now raging about what he called abuse of attorney-client privilege after feds raided Cohen.

Cohen's attorneys have filed a temporary restraining order in the matter, asking the court to stop federal prosecutors from using some of the records they seized. "He has an acute interest in those proceedings and the manner in which these materials are reviewed", Hendon told the court.

The source confirmed the FBI was looking into the payments, including the Enquirer link, but they were "not the main focus of that part of the investigation".

Federal Bureau of Investigation agents executed a series of search warrants on Michael Cohen's office and home on Monday, law enforcement officials said. "... He is the President of the United States".

The seized records also include communications between Trump and Cohen, who joined Trump's company, the Trump Organization, in 2006, which would most likely require a special team of agents to review because conversations between lawyers and clients are protected from scrutiny in most instances.

Cohen, who is under the microscope in multiple threads of investigations by NY state and federal prosecutors, resigned himself to the reality of the situation, admitting to CNN that he is anxious about what's next.

Cohen's attorney said in his statement Monday that the matter was referred from Mueller's probe to the U.S. Attorney's Office in the Southern District of NY.

"Those searches have been executed and the evidence is locked down", Joanna Hendon, Trump's lawyer in the case, said Friday.

"Sure I would like to".

The unusual step of searching the office was partly instigated by special counsel Robert Mueller, who is leading an inquiry into allegations that Mr Trump's team colluded with Russian Federation to help him win the election.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Thomas McKay said the legal issues at stake were no different than other cases involving lawyers' records.

The team also signed former Chicago Bears wideout Deonte Thompson and let free agent Brice Butler depart in free agency. The meeting between Bryant and Cowboys owner Jerry Jones was meant to straighten out the receiver's contract situation.

Federal investigators would not automatically get access to any tapes that might have been seized in the raids.

Investigators were also looking for information related to non-disclosure agreements between Cohen and adult film star Stormy Daniels and a former Playboy model.

The FBI also obtained warrants to seize material from Cohen's cell phones, laptop, tablet, and a safe deposit box.

The White House has consistently said Trump denies either affair.

"Attorney-client privilege is dead, ' tweeted Mr Trump, who said the agents 'broke in".

The US attorney said in court the raids were allowed to look for evidence of conduct "for which Cohen is under criminal investigation".

"The viability of this prosecution, it has to be done right", Hendon told US District Judge Kimba Wood.

Federal prosecutors argued the government's "taint team" could make the determination on what items would pass muster. Much of the discussions at Friday morning's hearing took place at the judge's bench, and out of earshot of reporters.
