Russia: Syria chemical attack 'fabrication' by foreign power

17 April 2018

Russian Federation has dismissed the purported chemical attack as fake and strongly warned the USA and its allies against launching a military strike in Syria.

Russia's foreign ministry said on Saturday that Western strikes on Syria came as the country had "a chance of a peaceful future".

Sergey Rudskoy, head of the General Operations Directorate of the Russian Staff, was reported to say that Russia may reconsider supplying S-300 missile defense systems to Syria.

Trump has pressed military leaders to develop plans for a sustained assault on Syrian regime targets in response to last weekend's chemical attack, the officials said.

Announcing the strikes, US President Donald Trump criticised both Russian Federation and Iran, which have backed Assad's government.

It was unclear what the approach might mean for Russian and Iranian forces in Syria.

The Labour leader questioned whether the regime was responsible for the atrocity on 7 April, saying: "While much suspicion rightly points to the Assad government, chemical weapons have been used by other groups in the conflict". "We will attribute where we can", he said, accusing Russian Federation of "not playing by the same rules" and of "blurring the boundaries between criminal and state activity".
