'Golden State Killer' suspect Joseph DeAngelo scheduled to appear in court today

Investigators said they finally tracked him down by matching known DNA of the killer through genealogy websites.

Suspected Golden State Killer Joseph James DeAngelo is expected to appear in a Sacramento court for his arraignment.

It's unclear whether DeAngelo will ever be prosecuted in the Bay Area rape cases. But said it's possible he joined the search for the killer. It came back a match to DNA found at murder scenes in Ventura and Orange counties, authorities said. They began the painstaking task of eliminating each person through circumstantial evidence, and were left with a list that included DeAngelo and a few others.

Police in the central California city of Visalia said Thursday that DeAngelo is now a suspect in a 13th killing and about 100 burglaries that occurred while he was a police officer in the neighboring farm town of Exeter from 1973 to 1976.

"It seems insane to say a police officer investigating a very serious crime can't do something your cousin can do on a Tuesday", Murphy said.

Investigators found Deangelo through stored DNA and arrested him at his home this week.

Huddle told The Associated Press it is "still just going insane in my mind".
