Bale scores stunning equaliser in bad-tempered Clasico

09 May 2018

Valverde was commenting after a typically frantic Clasico against Real Madrid at Camp Nou on Sunday, the champions remaining unbeaten following a 2-2 draw despite Sergi Roberto's first-half red card.

The fourth El Clasico of the season ended in a draw after both Real Madrid and Barcelona scored two goals each.

However, Gareth Bale had the final say and his 72nd minute equaliser means that Los Blancos maintain their momentum as they gear up for the Champions league final against Liverpool in less than three weeks.

Ronaldo, who appeared to be injured in the process of scoring, was replaced by Marco Asensio at half-time, while Nelson Semedo plugged the gap left by Roberto by coming on for Philippe Coutinho.

But Messi came to the hosts' rescue, sending the ball past Keylor Navas in the 52nd to swing the match back in Barcelona's favor despite playing a man down. With nothing to lose and Barcelona already been declared as the La Liga Champions for the 2017-18 season, both the teams left no stone unturned to define their supremacy in the Spanish league.

Philippe Coutinho was not comfortable on the right-hand side. There was the standing ovation for Andres Iniesta and valuable opener from Luis Suarez. But it was another magnificent goal, one again involving Suarez, who set Messi up, before the Argentine moved back on himself and shot the ball through a tight angle. He finished into the bottom corner.

They aren't a one-man team, but their Portuguese talisman is head and shoulders above the rest of their forwards and after his tangle with Gerard Pique, Real will definitely be sweating over his fitness. He crossed into the box and fired a pinpoint pass to Suarez at the far post.

In between, Messi had played in Jordi Alba with a sumptuous ball over the top but even he lost his cool during five mad minutes at the end of the first period.

Ronaldo limped to the sideline, and though he returned after receiving treatment to see out the end of the first half - and almost scored a second goal - he was substituted at half-time.

Bale's goal was his 15th in 24 games this year and the Welshman will hope it sparks a return to favour ahead of Real's European climax in Kiev.

And the bad blood did not stop there in a match in which the referee Alejandro Hernandez Hernandez dished out one red card to Sergi Roberto, eight yellow cards, including bookings for Ramos and Suarez.
