McConnell scraps August recess | Mcclatchy

John McCain, fighting brain cancer back home in Arizona, who tweeted on Saturday: "Congress can't ignore this critical issue - and the many lives it impacts - any longer".

McConnell's revelation, during his exclusive interview on Fox News' "The Ingraham Angle", could squash momentum behind a discharge petition that House Democrats' and a few Republicans are pushing to circumvent House leadership and force the full House to debate four immigration bills.

Corker, a vocal critic of Trump, told reporters that he expects the president's reaction to the plan "might not be so positive", but it is a necessary undertaking to reassert congressional authority.

Senators will reportedly be able to spend the first week of August in their home state.

That, of course, opens the door to another negotiation between now and August between McConnell and Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer, D-N.Y.

A senior Senate Democratic aide said Democratic lawmakers were skeptical that McConnell really wanted more time to deal with nominations and appropriations, suspecting that the move had more to do with keeping them off the campaign trail. Even if it passes the Senate, it might end up being scrapped from the final version of the defense bill negotiated with the House. The funding deadline is September 30, just weeks before the midterm elections.

For a team to be on the verge of winning a championship they need to be nearly ideal when it comes to uncontested shots. James and coach Tyronn Lue raved about Smith's ability to bounce back from tough moments but that didn't happen Sunday.

There are other challenges to convincing Republicans to sign on. Doing so could court a veto and bruise their standing with Trump voters they need in midterm elections.

But the cancellation also has another benefit that McConnell did not mention.

Only one Republican incumbent, Senator Dean Heller of Nevada, faces a similar dilemma.

Now it could deliver more women to Congress in a year in which Democrats are hoping to gain a majority in the House of Representatives.

West Virginia's Democratic Sen. Bill Nelson of Florida, described the cancellation as a purely political maneuver.

"It's not that we don't want fair trade", Rounds told reporters. "This is nothing but raw politics". He added that as far as he was concerned, though, "this is the kind of thing that should pass 100 to nothing".

"Instead of addressing the real problems in the global trade of these products, today's action targets America's allies when we should be working with them to address the unfair trading practices of countries like China", Ryan said last week.

Later, after the health-care measure was defeated on the Senate floor, that was revised so that the recess was reduced by just one week.

Republicans passed an overhaul of the tax code at the end of previous year and confirmed a new conservative Supreme Court justice, but otherwise have failed to accomplish any other big-ticket campaign promises.

The Senate is expected to take a week away from D.C., for a district work period the week of August 6, before returning for the balance of the month, according to the revised schedule.

Republicans have hit Democrats for their "obstruction" of Donald Trump's nominees in the past.
