Trump Reiterates Call to Bring Russia Back Into Group of Eight

Last year, the USA president was wowed by a French military parade in Paris after being invited to join Mr Macron for his country's annual Bastille Day celebrations.

As Toronto Star reporter Daniel Dale observed, Trump spent much of the G7 summit "painting a highly inaccurate tariff picture-wrongly suggesting everyone else has high tariffs while USA has none". The measure hits European Union trading partners even though the main target is overcapacity at state-backed Chinese producers, who Europe and the US have long complained have flooded markets with cheap steel.

Asked if in letting Russia rejoin the group, Crimea should now be recognized as part of Russia, Trump blamed his predecessor in the White House.

The statement made no reference to Russian Federation being invited back into the G7, but the leaders did say they would continue "to engage with Russian Federation on addressing regional crises and global challenges, where it is in our interests".

Canada, the summit host and the nation that has borne much of the brunt of Trump's trade fusillades in recent days, is holding out hope that progress can be made on less controversial issues such as gender equality and economic growth. "He will be honored in Washington, at the @WhiteHouse, shortly", Trump said on Twitter after flying out of Canada.

Trump's strained relationship with the rest of the G7 was evident on Saturday when he arrived late for the opening session, with Trudeau addressing a gathering that included an empty chair where the president was meant to be.

"The United States has been taken advantage of for decades and decades, and we can't do that anymore", Trump said. He reiterated his longstanding view that the USA has been taken advantage of in global trade, adding, "We're like the piggy bank that everybody's robbing and that ends". "It's going to stop or we'll stop trading with them", he said.

Stephens stands in Halep's path
There was no doubt entering Thursday's semifinals that there would be an American woman advancing to the final of the French Open. Like previous year , I feel Halep will make an excellent start to the match but when it gets tight, she might just falter.

British Prime Minister Theresa May said the other G7 leaders registered their "deep disappointment at the unjustified decision by the U.S." on its closest allies.

Trump blasted both Trudeau and Macron on Twitter ahead of the G7 summit, which he was reportedly wary of attending. It says the group acknowledges free, fair and mutually beneficial trade as the key engine for growth and jobs and adds, quote, "we strive to reduce tariff barriers, nontariff barriers and subsidies" - unquote. But one image may have been a more realistic look into how some negotiations "really" went. To United States, frankly, it would be a good thing but I'm not looking to do that.

Trump was departing the Canadian summit several hours early, heading to Singapore for his summit with North Korea's Kim Jong Un on what he called a "mission of peace". Trump has been open on his desires for better relations with Moscow. "We will win that war 1,000 times".

And while his bellicosity and volatility has deeply strained relations between the USA and its historic allies, Trump insisted that he had terrific relationships with the G7 leaders, though before arriving at the summit he had unleashed a tweetstorm against some of them.
