Kavanaugh Hearing Interrupted by Protesters, Dems Call for DELAY — COURT CHAOS

06 September 2018

They want to review 100,000 documents about Kavanaugh's record being withheld by the White House as well as some 42,000 documents released to the committee on a confidential basis on the eve of the hearing, along with others not sought by Republicans on the committee.

With impeachment on the minds of many Democrats, some have expressed concerns that Judge Kavanaugh would abuse his position on the Supreme Court to protect the president.

Kavanaugh declined to answer a series of questions about the powers of the president, questions important to Democrats particularly because of ongoing investigations surrounding President Donald Trump.

Ever the polished politician, Kavanaugh took time to explain why he was dodging all these "how would you rule on ...?" questions: "My personal beliefs are not relevant to how I decide cases", he said. "So sad to see!"

One woman shouted about gun violence and the "slaughter" of children and yelled "sham president, sham justice!".

Protesters disrupt the start of the supreme court nominee Brett Kavanaugh's confirmation hearing. We can not and should not confirm a justice who believes the president's views carry the day. He pulled his hand back, turned his back to me and walked away. The Washington Post reports that the hearing, "quickly devolved into a political brawl... as Democrats loudly objected to the proceedings as rushed".

In her opening statement at the hearings into the Supreme Court nomination of Brett Kavanaugh, Sen. There are also a few "formative" years missing from those records, during which time Democratic Senator Leahy has now suggested Kavanaugh may have engaged in some illegal activity regarding stolen emails.

As if making a direct comparison to President Trump , Biden repeated that McCain "could not stand the abuse of power". But that admiration wasn't surprising, because Senator McCain was known as a man of integrity and conviction.

"Republicans are trying to jam through a Supreme Court nominee who was selected specifically because he would overturn Roe v. Wade and end protections for people with pre-existing conditions", Sen.

The first moment came when Sen.

Kavanaugh is a conservative judge - some scholars have argued he is one of the most conservative federal judges.

The groups that sent the letter to the Senate's top Democrat are CREDO, Democracy for America, Indivisible, UltraViolet, 350.org, Color Of Change, DailyKos, Demand Progress, Friends of the Earth, Justice Democrats, Social Security Works, #VOTEPROCHOICE, and Women's March.

Trump jumped into the fray late in the day, saying on Twitter that Democrats were "looking to inflict pain and embarrassment" on Kavanaugh. He also accused them of obstruction.

Brett Kavanaugh was in no mood to meet a father whose kid was killed during the Parkland shooting - snubbing his handshake attempt during a SCOTUS confirmation hearing.

Republicans said Tuesday that their staff had enough time to review the documents, but Sen.

DeSantis is expected to continue his messages about being tough on illegal immigration and a watchdog for government spending. But he had prominent elected officials - including Congressman Alcee Hastings , Miramar Mayor Wayne Messam and state Rep.

"I think you are taking advantage of my decency and my integrity", Grassley fired-back. "We shouldn't have to put up with this kind of stuff".

But with Trump's fellow Republicans holding a slim majority in the Senate, and with no sign of any of them voting against the nomination, it remains highly likely Kavanaugh will be confirmed to the lifetime job on the High Court despite Democrats histrionics. Trump's successful first nominee, Neil Gorsuch, also was a Kennedy law clerk the same year as Kavanaugh.

Kavanaugh's comments will do little to pacify skeptics, who have cited his opposition to a court ruling past year that an undocumented immigrant teenager who was in government custody was entitled to seek an abortion.

In his opening remarks, Kavanaugh vowed to uphold the attributes of an ideal judge and remain "a neutral and impartial arbiter who favours no litigant or policy".

"I revere the Constitution". If I've crossed the line of what I should say, then I'm not going to have an open mind in that case.

Kavanaugh made it clear where his loyalties lie. Fifty-eight percent of evangelical white Protestants say the high court should make it harder to get an abortion; it's about the same among conservatives and Republicans alike.

His reticence on the specific subject of the subpoena, however, is significant given the legal cloud hanging over President Trump that is the special counsel investigation into Russian collusion in the 2016 election helmed by Robert Mueller.

Kavanaugh, his wife, Ashley, and eldest daughter entered the committee room with Grassley just after 9:30 am. He also saying being a good judge means paying attention to words that are written-Constitution, statutes.
