Challenger Pressley notches upset victory in MA congressional race

Ayanna Pressley's historic victory over a 10-term incumbent in the 7th Congressional District primary Tuesday night could vault her as the next national champion of the progressive movement, experts say.

Voters in MA are deciding who advances to the November general election to run for governor, U.S. Senate, U.S. House and a slew of other offices.

Stunning news out of the MA primary this evening, where 10-term incumbent House member Michael Capuano has been defeated for re-election by Boston City Council member Ayanna Pressley.

"I will tell you, I'm sorry it didn't work out but this is life and this is OK. Here's to November." A Pressley campaign insider, meanwhile, posted a video showing the candidate the moment she learned she'd won.

Many have compared her upset in MA to Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez's defeat of longtime Democratic Rep. Joe Crowley in June.

The 44-year-old Pressley cruised to victory in a district once served by Tip O'Neill and John F. Kennedy.

Pressley's surprise win is the latest in a series of victories for progressive candidates, many of whom are young or minority or both, and another sign that Democratic women are making major strides in political representation in 2018.

The New York Times reported the district under contest, the Seventh Congressional District, stretching from Boston's Dorchester and Roxbury neighborhoods to the Cambridge and Somerville across the Charles River, is MA only majority non-white district, but Capuano, who is white, has never faced a serious primary challenger in his Congressional tenure. She is poised to become the only black member of Massachusetts' mostly male congressional delegation. And precinct-level data shows Pressley was likely dependent on white progressives voters in places with few minorities, like Sommerville. "It does point to a generational shift and this notion that a lot of folks are not waiting their turn in the way they might have years ago".
