That is more than double the same week a year ago when there were only 343 active oil rigs. It was the 14th straight week the oil rig count has grown and the 24th week in the past 25. The latest Baker Hughes North American rig count for the week ending April 21st increased to a total of 857 from 847 the previous week. The Organisation of the Petroleum Exporting Countries agreed to cut output by about 1.2 million barrels per day for six months from January 1 to prop up prices and reduce a glut.
